Monroe Calculating Machine Co. is founded at Newark, N.J., by entrepreneur Jay R. (Randolph) Monroe, 29, to produce a machine patented in 1874 by Frank S. Baldwin, now 74. The Arithometer was the first adding machine sold in America, Baldwin patented a calculating machine in 1902, he met Monroe last year, and he has refined his machine with an independent shaft for carrying balances and a reverse order for dividing and calculating.
A commercial ammonia plant employing the Haber process of 1908 begins production at Ludwigshafen, Germany. The ammonia is used primarily for making explosives.
