Anthony Wilding wins in men's singles at Wimbledon, Mrs. Chambers in women's singles; Maurice McLoughlin wins in men's singles at Newport, Mary Browne in women's singles.
Ebbets Field opens in Brooklyn April 9 (see 1898). Brewer Charles Ebbets has kept the Dodgers from moving to Baltimore by paying about $100,000 for a piece of property bordered by Bedford Avenue, Belmont Avenue, Sackman Street, and Sullivan Place, and the owners of the Dodgers have spent $650,000 to put up a steel-and-concrete stadium seating 18,000 (it will be expanded to seat nearly 31,500) that will survive until 1957.
Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics win the World Series, defeating the New York Giants 4 games to 1.
Knute Rockne revolutionizes football by making brilliant use of the forward pass to defeat the Army team and change the course of the game. Norwegian-born Knute Kenneth Rockne, 25, is captain of the Notre Dame varsity, he receives 17 out of 21 passes thrown by Charles "Gus" Dorais, he gains 243 yards, and Notre Dame beats Army 35 to 13.
