1906 - Population
Population
The U.S. population reaches 85 million, Britain has 38.9 million, Ireland 4.3, France 39.2, Germany 62, Russia over 120. China's population approaches 400 million.
India's population nears 300 million, up from little more than 200 million in 1850. Mohandas Gandhi in South Africa takes a vow of sexual abstinence (brahmacharya) and will oppose other means to limit population in India. (In 1885, at age 16, Gandhi had sex with his 14-year-old wife while his father died in another room of the house. British physicians in the last century introduced Western medicine to reduce India's death rate, and British moralists eliminated the slaughter of female children and other customs that held the population in check.)
The commercially-prepared spermicidal jellies are introduced.
