The Glasgow School of Art opens under the direction of Scottish architect-designer, water-colorist, and art nouveau exponent Charles Rennie Mackintosh, 30, who has designed the school's building.
Painting: Avenue de L'Opéra, Place du Théâtre Français: Misty Weather and Rue de l'Epicerie, Rouen—Morning, Gray Weather by Camille Pissarro; The Sleep of King Arthur in Avalon by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, who has been painting the massive work since 1880; The Venetian Wine Shop by John Singer Sargent; Sunday Morning, Appledore by Childe Hassam. Aubrey Beardsley dies of tuberculosis at Menton, France, March 16 at age 25; Gustave Moreau at Paris April 18 at age 72; Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones at London June 17 at age 64; Pierre C. Puvis de Chavannes at Paris October 10 at age 73.
