Zanzibar abolishes slavery April 6 by decree of the sultan whose country has been a British protectorate since 1890 (see 1873; 1884; 1892).

"There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers," writes Susan B. Anthony in "The Status of Women, Past, Present and Future," published in the May issue of the Arena.

The Associazione Nazionale per le Donne is founded at Rome to advance the cause of Italian women (see 1899).

Alfred Dreyfus's brother Mathieu demands a new trial for Alfred after learning that the handwriting on a key piece of evidence in the 1891 trial was not that of Alfred but of former Austrian army officer Marie Charles Ferdinand Walsin Esterházy, now 50. The finding was made early last year by French intelligence chief Colonel Georges Picquart, 43 (see politcs [Zola], 1898).
