Human Rights, Social Justice
New Zealand adopts woman suffrage September 19 and becomes the first country to do so. A petition signed by a third of New Zealand's women has persuaded the House of Representatives to pass the act, Women's Christian Temperance Union franchise department head Katharine Sheppard has petitioned for the reform three times in the last 3 years, the number of names on the petition has grown by 10,000 each time until it has reached 31,872, and former prime minister Sir John Hall, now 68, has guided the suffrage bill through the House (see 1898).
Colorado's male electorate votes for woman suffrage.
