London children in Bethnal Green live almost entirely on bread; 83 percent of them have no other solid food for 17 out of 21 meals each week. Black treacle (molasses) and cheap jam make the bread palatable, but scurvy, rickets, and tuberculosis are widespread in such districts, as they are in many British and European industrial centers.
