Exploration, Colonization
African explorer James A. Grant dies at his native Nairn, Scotland, February 11 at age 64; explorer-physician Mehmed Emin has trouble with German authorities in Tanganyika, crosses into the Congo Free State in May, and is murdered by Arab slave traders at Kanema October 23 at age 52, having served as governor of Equatoria, written important papers on Africa for German journals, and sent collections of African plants and animals to Europe.
