Consumer Protection
Danish veterinarian Bernhard Laurits Frederik Bang, 44, develops a method for eradicating tuberculosis from dairy herds (see agriculture [Bang's disease], 1896). The first U.S. cattle tuberculosis test is made March 3 on a herd at Villa Nova, Pennsylvania, with tuberculin brought from Europe by the dean of the University of Pennsylvania veterinary department.
R. H. Macy partner Nathan Straus launches a campaign for pasteurized milk; he will establish milk stations in New York and other large cities.
Advocates of pure food laws petition Congress to hold hearings (see 1889; Wiley, 1902).
