The Andrew Jergens Company is founded at Cincinnati by Dutch-born entrepreneur Jergens, 30, in partnership with a local soapmaker to make a luxury toilet soap. A onetime lumberjack, Jergens will formulate a hand lotion whose popularity will make him rich.
Colorado silver king Horace Tabor and his blonde, blue-eyed divorcée mistress Elizabeth "Baby Doe" McCourt are secretly married by a justice of the peace at St. Louis in September (see 1880; 1883).
