German embryologist Oskar (Wilhelm August) Hertwig, 26, at the University of Jena concludes that fertilization of the female egg is accomplished by a single male cell. He has worked with sea urchins (Arbacia punctulata), whose female produces roughly a million eggs per season (see Fol, 1879).
