German-born U.S. photographers David Bachrach, Jr., 30, and Edward Levy, 29, patent a photoengraving process that will be the basis of an industry. Bachrach will establish the portrait photography firm Bachrach, Inc. Levy and his brother Max will patent an etched glass grating or screen for making halftone engravings (see 1880; Ives, 1886).
