Nonfiction: Lombard Street by Walter Bagehot; Thrift by Samuel Smiles; Winter Sunshine by naturalist John Burroughs is based on observations made on a visit to England and establishes his reputation (he has lived since 1873 on a farm at Esopus, N.Y.).
Fiction: The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope, whose work reflects observations made on a journey he made through the northern states during the American Civil War.
Poet-novelist-clergyman Charles Kingsley dies at Eversley, Hampshire, January 23 at age 55; poet-historian-political philosopher Edgar Quinet at Versailles March 27 at age 72.
