Retail, Trade
New York merchants L. Straus & Sons open a china department in Macy's basement in March and within a few months advertise that they have the "most extensive assortment" of its kind ever displayed in America—majolica, plates, saucers, tureens, glassware of every size and shape, cut-glass vases, and the like (see 1873). R. H. Macy follows Margaret Getchell LaForge's suggestion and displays its doll collection in the world's first Christmas windows, beginning a tradition that other stores will follow (see 1877).
