U.S. postal inspectors seize more than 60,000 "rubber articles" and 3,000 boxes of pills under terms of the 1872 Comstock Law.

The first Hutterite immigrants to America arrive at New York from Europe (see 1528). A group speaking Tyrolean Hutterische dialect founds the Bonhomme colony at Yankton, South Dakota, and it will be followed by 200 colonies in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Montana, Washington, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan; the Hutterites now number 20,000.
