Opera: Boris Godunov 1/24 at St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater, with music by Russian composer Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, 34, libretto from the Aleksandr Pushkin play of 1831; Die Fledermaus (The Bat) 4/5 at Vienna's Theater-an-der-Wien, with music by Johann Strauss.
First performances: Overture to the Piccolomini (Max and Thekta) by French composer (Paul Marie Theodore) Vincent d'Indy, 22, 1/25 at Paris; Patrie Overture in C minor by Georges Bizet 2/15 at Paris; Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi 5/22 at Milan's Church of San Marco. Verdi has written the work to memorialize the late poet-novelist-patriot Alessandro Manzoni.
