Theater: The Snow Maiden (Snegurochka) by Aleksandr Ostrovsky 5/11 at Moscow's Bolshoi Theater; Thérèse Racquin by Emile Zola 7/11 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, Paris; Irish-born Brooklyn-raised actress Ada Rehan (originally Crehan), 13, makes her stage debut at Newark, New Jersey, in Across the Continent. Her name will be misspelled when she appears at Louisa Lane Drew's Arch Street Theater in Philadelphia and she will retain Rehan as her stage name (see 1879).

Actor-playwright Charles M. Barras dies at Cos Cob, Connecticut, March 31 at age 46; actor-theater manager William C. Macready at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, April 27 at age 83, having managed London's Covent Garden and Drury Lane theaters without financial success but with a new discipline that required thorough rehearsals to achieve a unity in which all roles were not only well played but also artistically coherent with each other; Laura Keene dies at Montclair, New Jersey, November 4 at age 53 (approximate).
