Pompey, New York-born mechanical engineer John E. (Edson) Sweet, 40, builds the first U.S. micrometer caliper for making tools.
The M1873 Winchester introduced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company of New Haven, Connecticut, is an improvement on the M1866 and will gain wide popularity. The company will promote it as "the gun that won the West" and in the next 40 years will sell 720,610 of the new model (see 1876).
