German engineer Carl (Paul Gottfried) von Linde, 31, at Munich's Technische Hochshcule invents a continuous process of liquefying gases that will lead to the first successful compression systems for modern refrigerators (see Perkins, 1834; Gorrie, 1842; Lowe, 1865; 1895). Linde will develop a methyl ether refrigerator next year and an ammonia refrigerator in 1876.
Henri Nestlé's Infant Milk Food of 1866 is introduced in the United States (see 1875).
Coors Beer has its beginnings in the Golden Brewery opened at Golden, Colorado Territory, by Prussian-born Denver bottling-company owner Adolph (Herrman Joseph) Coors, 26, with $2,000 of his own savings and $18,000 from his partner Jacob Schueler. Having lost both his parents and changed his name from Kohrs, young Coors arrived at Baltimore as a stowaway 5 years ago and was obliged to work off the cost of his passage. The enterprise 20 miles west of Denver shows a profit in its first year, Coors will buy out Schueler by 1880 to become sole proprietor, and in the next 10 years will increase annual production from 3,500 barrels to 17,600 barrels, a figure that will grow to 48,000 barrels by 1900 as Coors promotes his brand with innovative marketing.
Adolphus Busch becomes a full partner of his father-in-law and renames the Bavarian Brewery the E. Anheuser and Company's Brewing Association (see 1865). It remains much smaller than the city's 33-year-old Lemp Brewery, which produces a far superior brew, but Busch is a born salesman. He perseveres, and the Anheuser-Busch product will gradually improve (see Budweiser, 1876).

British wine making resumes after a lapse of nearly 3½ centuries (see 1536). Having inherited the title along with a fortune and the remains of the medieval castle Coch in South Wales, the young marquess of Bute begins planting vineyards that will continue production of wine until a shortage of labor halts operations in 1915.
