Consumer Protection

The Paris Council of Hygiene rules that margarine may not be sold as butter (see 1869; New York, 1877).

Japan's Ministry of Justice issues an order making it an offense to sell spoiled or fraudulently labeled food. Government inspectors will begin checking food items next year to make sure that there are no violations (see 1880).
