Population

The Dominion of Canada created in 1867 takes its first census. The nation has 1,082,940 French; 846,000 Irish; 706,000 English; 549,946 Scots; and 202,000 Germans (see Ukrainians, 1891).

The U.S. population reaches roughly 39 million while Germany has 41 million, France 36.1 (with 1.8 million in Paris), Italy 26.8, Great Britain 26, Ireland 5.4, Japan 33, and Brazil 10 million, including 1.5 million slaves.

Abortion is punishable by up to 5 years in prison under the criminal code enacted by the new German Empire.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton calls infanticide and abortion "disgusting and degrading crimes" but does not condemn women for resorting to them, saying the problem lies in men being unable to control their desires and women's inability to resist.
