Salt Lake City's Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI) opens under the aegis of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Mormons are expected to trade at the new Church-owned store, which will drive most "gentile" merchants out of the Utah Territory.
