Inventor Joseph R. Brown devises a micrometer caliper that will be widely employed in industry (see milling machine, 1862; grinding machine, 1876).
Former Austrian newspaper editor Gustav Mosler, 51, goes into partnership with fellow immigrant Fred Bahmann at Cincinnati to establish the Mosler-Bahmann Safe Co. in competition with the 8-year safe and bank-vault manufacturing firm founded by Charles Diebold. Mosler came to Cincinnati in the 1840s, he will die in 1874, his son Henri will paint scenes on the company's safes, and they will be decorated also in gold leaf. The company will outgrow its Cincinnati facilities and move in 1891 to nearby Hamilton, Ohio.
Inventor Elias Howe dies at Brooklyn, N.Y., October 3 at age 48, having created a revolution in manufacturing by inventing a machine that permits mass production of clothing. He raised a regiment in Connecticut and served in it during the Civil War but his patent on the sewing machine has expired.
