Clock manufacturer Seth Thomas dies at Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut, January 29 at age 73, leaving his business to his son and namesake; sewing machine inventor Walter Hunt dies at New York June 8 at age 62 before the first payment from Isaac M. Singer falls due, having derived little benefit from his Globe stove, fountain pen, breech-loading rifle, paper collar, safety pin, or other inventions.

Diebold Inc. has its beginnings in a safe and bank-vault manufacturing company founded at Cincinnati by German-born inventor Charles Diebold, whose firm will have patents on at least 67 different safes by 1870 (see 1872; Mosler, 1867).
