The first intercollegiate baseball game July 1 ends after 26 innings with an Amherst College team defeating a Williams team 73 to 32 on the grounds of the Maplewood Female Institute at Pittsfield, Massachusetts (see 1845; Cincinnati Red Stockings, 1869).

The Cachar Polo Club founded by British colonial officers stationed in Assam, India, is the world's first polo club.

U.S. heavyweight champion John "Old Smoke" Morrissey relinquishes his title April 4 and retires from the ring, making John C. Heenan the official champion (see 1858; 1860).
