Russian forces kill the Sufi leader Ghazi Muhammad, who has fought alongside the Persians against Russian control of Dagestan (see 1828). The Sufi elect Gamzai Bek to succeed Ghazi Muhammad as the mystical brotherhood's second imam (political-religious leader) (but see 1834).

Roman Catholic missionaries in Vietnam come under stronger pressure from the emperor Minh Mang following the death in late July of Le Van Duyet, who has refused to apply the emperor's orders against them, writing to him, "We still have between our teeth the rice which the missionaries gave us when we were starving." Minh Mang orders Le Van Duyet's grave to be desecrated and a plaque placed over what is left bearing the inscription, "Here lies the eunuch who resisted the law." He has missionaries banished, imprisoned, and even killed.
