Theater: The Piccolominos (Die Piccolomini) by Friedrich von Schiller 1/10 at Weimar's Hoftheater; The Death of Wallenstein (Wallenstein's Tod) by Schiller 4/20 at Weimar's Hoftheater (the plays complete the trilogy begun last year).

A new Comédie-Française theater is created at Paris through a merger of the troupe of the old Comédie-Francaise with that of François-Joseph Talma, now 36, who has developed a new level of realism in staging at his Théatre de la République (see 1789).

Playwright Pierre A. C. de Beaumarchais dies at Paris May 18 at age 67.
