A British naval squadron tests the scurvy-prevention theories of James Lind, who dies at Gosport, Hampshire, July 13 at age 78 (see 1747; 1753). The Royal Navy vessels sail for Madras with their hatches full of lemons and arrive 23 weeks later with only one seaman suffering from scurvy (see 1795).
