Painting: The Declaration of Independence by poet-turned-painter John Trumbull, now 38, who served as an aide to George Washington and then as adjutant to General Gates, attained a colonelcy before he was 21, sailed to England in 1780 to study with Benjamin West, was imprisoned on suspicion of treason, began his large canvas in London 8 years ago, and returned to the United States in 1789 to continue work on the painting, which includes 48 portraits, two thirds of them painted from life; The Madhouse by Francisco de Goya; Aspasia by Marie Geneviève Bouliar.
