Eau de Cologne is introduced at the German city by Italian barber Jean-Baptiste Farina, whose non-greasy, alcohol-based blend of lemon spirits, orange bitters, and minto oil from the bergamot fruit is much cheaper than perfume and will gain wide popularity for uses such as bath essence and mouthwash (see Grasse, 1873).
