The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is founded by Scotland's James VII (Britain's James II); membership in the order, whose roots date to as early as the 8th century, is limited to the king and eight knights. Membership will be increased to 12 early in the next century and raised to 16 in 1827, with Knights of the Thistle being ranked just below Knights of the Garter.
