John Plantagenet, duke of Bedford, leaves in March to resume the war in France after promising to act in accord with the council. He has ordered his brother Gloucester to desist from further attacks on Hainaut and tries to restore prosperity to the French districts under his rule by reforming the debased coinage, removing various abuses, and granting privileges to merchants and manufacturers. French forces commanded by the 24-year-old Jean d'Orléans defeat the English at Montargis. An illegitimate son of Louis, duc d'Orléans, young Jean will distinguish himself as a diplomat as well as in military prowess (see 1428).
Venice and Milan end hostilities in October after 3 years in which the Venetians have gained territories; the war will resume next year.
