Alfred the Aethling, son of England's late Ethelred II (the Unready), lays claim to the throne but is brutally murdered on orders from Harold I Harefoot. Harold proclaims himself king and banishes his half brother Hardecanute's mother, Emma.
The Cairo-born caliph Ma'd Abu Tamim al-Mustansir ascends the Fatimid throne June 13 at age 7 and will reign until his assassination in 1094, initially with help from his father's able vizier Ali bin Ahmad Jarjarai (see 1044).
The Japanese emperor Goichijo dies at age 28 after a 20-year reign and is succeeded by his 27-year-old brother, who will reign until 1045 as the emperor Gosuzaku.

Modern musical notation is pioneered by Guido d'Arezzo, who also invents the "great scale," or gamut, the hexachord, and hexachord solmization (see 1026).
