Political Events

The Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich II dies at his castle of Grona near Göttingen July 13 at age 51 after a 10-year reign (preceded by 12 years as German king). He is buried in the cathedral at Bamberg and succeeded as king of the Germans and Roman emperor by his son, 34, who will reign until 1039 as Conrad II, founding the Franconian (or Salic) dynasty that will rule until 1125.

Poland's Boleslav I strengthens his independence from imperial control by having himself crowned by the archbishop of Gniezno December 25 in a papally-sanctioned coronation ceremony.

Norway's Olaf II Haraldsson and his ecclesiastical adviser introduce a religious code at Moster: it constitutes the country's first national code of laws.

Religion

Pope Benedict VIII dies at Rome in April or May and is succeeded by his greedy layman brother, who will reign until 1032 as John XIX as the Tusculani family retains control of the papal throne.
