England's Ethelred (Aethelred) II invades South Wales; the Danes take Canterbury in his absence, begin a sack of the town September 8, and seize the 57-year-old archbishop Elphege (Aelfheah).

The Japanese emperor Ichijo dies at age 31 after a 15-year reign and is succeeded by his cousin, 35, who will reign until 1016 as Sanjo but begins to lose his eyesight almost immediately.

Religion

China's third Song (Sung) dynasty emperor Zhen Zong (Chen Tsung) decrees that temples to Confucius be built in all district cities. Claiming divine revelation, the emperor has created a number of new cults in which rival Buddhist and Daoist (Taoist) beliefs have been fused.
