Bio
Prof. Dr. R.K. Mishra was born in 1946 in India. He graduated with honours from the A.N.M.M.C of Gaya in 1991. In year 2000 he came to the UK and established his academic surgical career in Ninewells Hospital and Medical School with Professor Alfred Cuschieri in Scotland and the University of Dundee. He was in Department of Surgery and Molecular Oncology at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School in Dundee. He did his Masters degree in Minimal Access Surgery from University of Dundee. Currently, he is Director of Laparoscopy Hospital, New Delhi. Prof. Mishra is Professor and Head of Minimal Access Surgery and Surgical Technology at the TGO University in India and holds honorary professorship at several European and Asian Universities. Prof. Mishra has become respected throughout the world for his pioneering work in the development, execution and clinical evaluation of minimal access surgery. Dr. Mishra’s surgical technique has been adopted internationally for the management of a whole range of intra-abdominal pathologies. He is undoubtedly an international leader in his field and his pre-eminence is such that he has been President of the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, Chairman of the Association of Academic Departments of Minimal Access Surgery in India. Throughout his career Dr. Mishra has been the author of four laparoscopic postgraduate books, three of which have been in the last four years. He has also contributed to numerous chapters in undergraduate and postgraduate books and published over fourty original articles in major peer review journals. Prof. Mishra continues to develop and evaluate novel technologies and techniques including the Two Port Cholecystectomy and Two Port Hernia surgery. Dr. Mishra has developed this unique technique with extra corporeal Mishra's knot to perform this two port Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy and Hernia surgery. He has trained many surgeons in these techniques and together with his colleagues at the University of Dundee and TGO University, he is setting up the Institute of Minimal Access Surgery at Dwarika, New Delhi. This is a joint venture between twith university to establish an interface science group of top life and physical research scientists working closely with clinical academics to develop the next generation of interventional devices and technologies for minimal access surgery, interventional radiology and interventional endoscopy. It is clear that Prof. Mishra's work has been of immense benefit to mankind and has brought credit to Indian medicine and academic life. It is for this reason that Prof. Mishra received Global Medical Education Award by vice-chancellors of eight apex universities during National Open and Distance Education Summit 2007 in the presence of Honourable Shri P.R. Kyndiah, Union Minister for tribal affairs, Government of India. He is recepient of Lord Ashdown award for his valuable teaching contribution in the field of Minimal Access Surgery. Pof. Mishra is the visiting faculty and Honorary Professor of many leading institution of the world like Iranian Medical University, Tehran, Iran, King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Iranian Hospital, Dubai; Aljela Hospital, Tripoli, Libya, Gulu Independent Hospital, University of Gulu, Uganda. King and Edward Hospital, Kenya, Istanbul Goztepe Education and research hospital, Istanbul, Turkey . Prof. Mishra has been an invited faculty at over 200 local, National and International meetings and has been actively involved in teaching Minimal Access surgery techniques to other surgeons both in the India and abroad since 2001. Prof. Dr. R.K. Mishra has the distinction of being First University Qualified Master Minimal Access Surgeon of India. His thesis was selected as the best research in university and the revolutionary topic was on Optimum shadow-casting illumination for endoscopic task performance which was published in Archives of Surgery (Arch Surg.2004; 139: 889-892). Since graduating from United Kingdom, Dr. Mishra has contributed significantly to the field of Minimal access surgery. Although he has contributed to many areas of research, his most notable and prolific contribution has been to the understanding, treatment, and ergonomical control of laparoscopic hernia surgery. Among the many awards presented to him, the following may be mentioned here: He was recipient of Lord Ashdown Award and Award of British Medical Association during his stay in United Kingdom. Among the medals awarded him at various times for teaching were Grands Gold Medal at the Dubai in 2005 and Africa 2006. Prof. Mishra is a well renowned surgeon who has made gesticulation in the field of Laparoscopic Surgery with his exceptional and unique laparoscopic skills, innovative & cost effective procedures and research. Prof. Mishra has trained more than 2500 surgeons and gynaecologists in his home country India , as well as from more than 100 countries. He is the faculty who has started first time in the history of UAE, 10 days fully recognized Laparoscopic Training course with 70 hours CME recognized by Department of Health and medical services Government of Dubai and European Union of Medical Specialists. He is also faculty of Ethicon Institute Of Surgical Education, New Delhi. Prof. Mishra is a prolific author who has published his research findings in journal articles, abstracts, textbooks, book chapters, and in editorials. In addition to publishing his own research, he is much in demand as an editor for scientific publications. His one of the recent article published in Current Medical Journal of India about Complications of Laparoscopic Surgery has brought to light many errors commonly overlooked during surgery. Prof. Mishra is editor in chief of World Journal of Laparoscopic Surgery, an international peer reviewed publication of minimal access surgery. Prof. Mishra is an active international member of Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and Distinguished Member of European Association of Transluminal Surgery (EATS). Apart from his professional carrier in Minimal access surgery Prof. Mishra's interest and expertise straddles many issue areas in international relations, foreign policy and national security. He serves in different capacities various committees, expert group and is regularly consulted on policy and governance issues by a number of government departments, academic and research institutes and non-governmental organisations across the country.
