In ancient times Mael, a Breton monk, was diligent in gathering converts to the Church. One day the devil caused Mael to be transported in a boat to the North Pole, where the priest landed on an island inhabited by penguins. Being somewhat snow-blind, he mistook the birds for people, preached to them, and, taking their silence as a sign of willingness, baptized them into the Christian faith.
