Born in Madrid on January 17, 1600, Pedro Calderón de la Barca (kahl-day-ROHN day lah BAHR-kah), the national dramatist of Spain who was to dominate his age as thoroughly as the dramatic poet Lope de Vega (1562-1635) did his, came from a good family of the lower nobility.
