    Google the following words:  "pearl" AND "bible" AND "parable."  You will find a number of hits, and, if you've read the novel, the correct one will stand out to you.  Equally as important as what Steinbeck chose to fit into his story is what he chose NOT to put in.  Why do you think he chose as he did?
