Willa Cather's "Paul's Case" portrays a character whose need to escape from everyday reality grows progressively stronger. While this need is an intrinsic flaw; Paul's family life and society certainly exacerbate his condition. The materialistic steel city of Pittsburgh with its banal society in which the highlight of the week is for the men to sit resting their stomachs upon their legs as they unbutton their vests and roll up their...

This is an interesting question! Paul's suicide does seem a bit heavy-handed, but it is very much in Paul's character. Think about his interactions with the faculty at his school. He is flamboyant and unconventional, and his confidence makes the teachers feel uncomfortable. He also demonstrates the attitude that he has nothing to learn from them -- and his refusal to learn from his actions is part of his choice to commit suicide.
Paul is...

Paul's Case begins in Pittsburgh. The setting changes to New York City for the second half of the narrative.
Cather is not an author of convenience--she does not idly pick settings for simplistic reasons. The story of Paul's Case could not have been as effectively told had the two cities not been Pittsburgh and New York City.
Pittsburgh is an industrial city with a history of steel production. This sets it up as a grey, practical...

Yes. I hate being in Paul's shoes as he keeps on lying and deceiving people on petty matters- no matter how big or small and I know that secrets can't be kept forever, they would be exposed eventually. I would be dead if I faced the situation as him as lying is tantamount to cheating and it is a serious offense. I also don't want to brush up with the long arms of the law or face any permanent arrest. Kudos to people who have the same...

Paul has never experience the outside world before and so he expressed his innocence to the outside people, but in his heart, he was full of experience and knowledge. To his teachers, he was not at all "innocent" that people think he was as he was a dreamy and lazy adolescent who wants to taste the outside environment.

But in the outside world, his "innocence" was not really true or accurate as he can be easily attracted to the world of...

This means he is watching his everyday habits and routines he do in the morning when he wakes up. "Watching every stage of his toilet carefully in the mirror" proves the point that he is watching his usual start of his day where he would dress up, brush his teeth and get fresh and ready for the day ahead in the bathroom. When he looks at the mirror, he can be seen observing his common routine that he regularly do- meaning it is a habit for him...

Paul is a noncomformist adolescent whose passion for music, especially the opera, and for the finer things in life led him to an act of desperation. The desdain he felt extended to every aspect his life, especially the fact that his dreams of grandeur and luxury are often marred by his middle class reality.
He found an opening to partially fulfilling his dreams as a part-time usher at Carnegie Hall, where he enjoyed the opera, which he loves...

Paul had lied to everyone. His life was a series of lies and delusions of grandeur. He wanted so much to be part of the "romantic" life of the theater that he completely turned everyone against him. He was put out of school for his lies and disrespect for the teachers and the rules of the intuition. As we read in Cather's story,

"The upshot of the matter was that the Principal went to Paul's father, and Paul was taken out of school...

"Paul's Case" by Willa Cather is a short story that tells about a disillusioned high school student who takes a trip to New York, not unlike Holden Caulfield, and finds that his imagined life of living like a privileged person, from stolen money, provides him a contentment and satisfaction that his everyday life can not give him. In desperation, he kills himself in front of a train.
In the story his age is not mentioned, though he is a high...
