Patriot Games | Characters

Of Clancy's first five novels, Patriot Games provides the most careful character study. The novel is essentially about how Jack Ryan, a college history professor, becomes a member of the CIA. As it turns out, he has already attracted the attention of Admiral Greer, chief assistant to the CIA director, by presenting an insightful paper to some of the officers of the "Company." Ryan's courageous act of saving the prince's family only enhances his value to the agency. As the novel eventually reveals, Ryan was a capable marine who left the corps only because of a back injury sustained...
