This poem is an example of the pastoral genre of poetry. Pastoral refers literally to the 'pasture' or the fields where shepherds lived in the pre-industrial era. But pastoral poetry as a genre refers to the kinds of values, emotions and imagery conveyed in this poetry. Such poetry romanticizes nature, and sees romantic love as a natural corollary to living out of doors. The shepherd figures are romantic because they eschew material wealth or social position, and their lifestyles are vaunted in this poetry as noble and desirable.
