Parable of the Sower | Literary Precedents

Novelists of major reputation have written stories of the future as proliferating wasteland. Aldous Huxley's Ape and Essence (1948) is set partially in the western United States, as is Parable of the Sower. Nevil Shute's On the Beach (1957) is a Gotterdammerung fable in a doomsday key, but it is related in mood to Butler's novel. Also related is George R. Stewart's Earth Abides (1949), which also includes the biblical reference of the sort Butler adopts. Another work is Philip K. Dick's science fiction classic Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?...
