Znaniecki, Florian
Znaniecki, Florian (1882–1959)Born in German-occupied Poland, Znaniecki was one of the first Polish professors of sociology, initiating the Polish Institute of Sociology and the Polish Sociological Review. In 1914 he collaborated with William Isaac Thomas on The Polish Peasant in Europe and America, a study which pioneered new methods (diaries, life-histories, letters); the methodology of the humanistic coefficient, in which the meanings to participants in social action are always considered; and the beginnings of a more systematic account of society. This was developed in his later books, Cultural Reality (1919) and Social Relations and Social Roles (1965).
