Taeuber, Irene B.
Taeuber, Irene B. (1906–74)An American statistician and demographer who nurtured the development of demography within sociology, especially in the 1930s and 1940s, and was the premier editor of Population Index. A feminist and humanist, she was nevertheless committed to the ideal of scientific objectivity. Taeuber is well-known for her important international population studies, particularly her demographic work in East and South-east Asia. The Population of Japan (1958), a demographic survey of Japan from the start of the literate period until 1955, was her magnum opus.
