natural area
natural areaA term used in urban ecology to denote an area inhabited by a population which shares common ‘social heritage, occupation, interests, or other distinguishing cultural possessions’ (A. Hawley, Human Ecology, 1950). In short, a distinctive community. In theories of environmental determinism (see environment), physical zones are seen as defining natural areas such as pays and regions. See also concentric zone theory.
