Klein, Viola (1908–73)
An Austrian social theorist, she fled to England as a refugee in 1939, becoming a domestic servant. Her second doctorate (obtained in 1944 from the London School of Economics) was published as The Feminine Character: History of an Ideology (1946), however her most famous study was conducted with Alva Myrdal on Women's Two Roles: Home and Work (1956, 1968 2nd edn.), an influential volume which was published before the advent of the second wave of feminism but anticipated many of its arguments.
