Walton, Henry
Walton, Henry (b Dickleburgh, nr. Diss, Norfolk; bapt. Tivetshall St Mary, nr. Dickleburgh, 5 Jan. 1746; d London, 19 May 1813).English painter, a pupil of Zoffany. He was a gentleman painter and his work is rare. His portraits are unexceptional, but he painted a small number of genre scenes that are amongst the finest of their time in English art, notable for their unaffected charm and sureness of tone (Girl Plucking a Turkey, 1776, Tate, London). They have something of the quiet dignity of Chardin, with whose work he may have been familiar (he is said to have visited France).
