Pan Painter
Pan Painter.Greek red-figure vase painter, active in Athens c.480–c.450 BC, named after a krater with an amusing scene of Pan amorously pursuing a shepherd boy (MFA, Boston). He was one of the best painters of his time, fluent and vigorous in style, and also the most versatile, decorating various types of vase with images that encompass tragedy as well as comedy: ‘His range of subjects is unrivalled—all types of genre, myth scenes and figures restated or invented’ (John Boardman, Athenian Red Figure Vases: The Archaic Period, 1975).
