Nagler, Georg Kaspar
Nagler, Georg Kaspar (b Oberfiesbach, Oberbayern, 6 Jan. 1801; d Munich, 20 Jan. 1866).German art historian and bookseller. He was the author of two massive works of reference, Neues allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon (New General Dictionary of Artists, 22 vols., 1835–52), the largest dictionary of artists before Thieme–Becker, and Die Monogrammisten (5 vols., 1858–79), a dictionary of artists' monograms that was completed by associates after his death. His other writings included a monograph on Raphael (1836).
